Chris Crary, fan favorite contestant on Bravo TV’s Top Chef, understands how to meld distinct flavors to create a delicious twist on traditional fare. As Chef de Cuisine at the Whist restaurant in Santa Monica, Crary connects to his guests through the shared enjoyment of food. His mission is to promote the social aspect of food in a healthier way. At the Minneapolis Home + Garden Show, Crary will demonstrate an updated and healthy version of a classic dish and discuss life as a chef.

1. How would you describe your culinary style?

My style changes frequently and is ever evolving. I'm very eclectic in my approach. I blend together Italian, Asian, Spanish and Mediterranean. Most of all, I just love to have fun with food. I do a lot of classic dishes with modern twists.

2. Can you briefly describe how you first got involved with food and cooking?

I first got involved with cooking around the age of 12. My family would go on vacations every year with my relatives that lived in different states. My extended family loved to cook and viewed eating as more of a social, fun environment. I loved the whole idea of gathering around the dinner table and socializing over great food. Cooking is the only thing I have done my whole life and I love it!

3. How did you get involved with Bravo’s Top Chef?

I had always wanted to see if I was good enough to actually make it onto Top Chef. So, I pushed myself for a very long time and made it one of my major goals in life. The experience was crazy, it's a hundred times more intense than you can ever imagine, but I loved every second of it. I walked away from the show a much better chef and person.

4. What advice do you have for the home cook?

Cooking is meant to be fun and social. Don't stress if you make a mistake or something doesn't turn out the way you want.

5. What is the most important point you’ve learned from years of cooking?

Cooking should be a gathering of friends and family. Cherish the ones who are with you and enjoy your time spent with them.
