Bryan Baeumler on stage at Vancouver Home + Design Show 2012

Before we usher in planning for the upcoming BC Home + Garden Show (that’s February 20-24, 2013 for all you keeners!), we thought we’d wrap up a few details from the Vancouver Home + Design Show earlier this month! Braving the rain (and the end of our extra-long summer), nearly 36,000 shoppers stopped by BC Place from October 11-14, where advice and inspiration were abundant on everything home and design.

Appearances by Bryan Baeumler, Jillian Harris, Aly Velji and Janette Ewen ensured the weekend was not without expert insight while attractions such as Close Quarters and the BC Hydro Power Smart Home proved style does not have to be compromised for space and sustainability!

In the Ultimate Upcycle Challenge, local colour expert and blogger Maria Killam snagged the most votes with her bright Kate Spade-inspired kelly-green end table, while 24 HoursDIY columnist Julia Dilworth’s transformation of a castaway Sutton Place Hotel desk earned the highest bid in the silent auction. In total, more than $1,000 was raised in support of Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver.

On the savoury side of things, famed chocolatier Thomas Haas of Thomas Haas Patisserie proved why he is known as a culinary tour-de-force in the Savour Thursday Dessert Duel, where CTV’s Coleen Christie, Erin Ireland from It’s To Die For and Tim Pawsey from judged his [winning dish] the top treat of the night.

With the help of Fable executive chef Trevor Bird, local amateur chef Ryan DeGobbi also came out on top in the Samsung Passion for Fresh Cooking Challenge, going home with $7,500 worth of Samsung appliances including the new Samsung WiFi-enabled French Door Fridge and a Samsung Flex Duo Range (we admit it: we’re really jealous!) .

Congratulations to the weekend’s big winners and a massive thank you to all our talent, exhibitors, and guests for making the Vancouver Home + Design Show another great success this year – we couldn’t have done it without you! See you in February!
