Capital Home and Garden Show first-time exhibitor, Mike Cox, of Wilmington, North Carolina owns Katie’s Backyard. He is the country’s top sales representative for Flip Flop Flower Pots.

This is a unique garden accessory that has a myriad of uses and applications. Mike suggests planting any type of flower in standard sized pots. He recommends bunching impatiens or Gerber daisies for a spring full of color that adds a nice vertical element to outdoor decorating.

We caught up with Mike Cox as he was packing to head to Washington DC for this weekend’s Capital Home and Garden Show at the Dulles Expo Center.

What was your first job?

My first job was bagging groceries in my dad’s grocery store at 12 years old

What attracted you to the Flip Flop Flowerpot?

Our grandparents use to drive a rebar in the garden and stack their pots on top of one another. When we found Flip Flop Flowerpots we knew that this was the up to date version of that concept.

Why the name Katie’s Backyard?

Katie is my 6 year old daughter, and it's her backyard where we play and have fun so we called our business Katie's Backyard.

What’s your favorite thing to plant in a garden?

My favorite thing to plant are tomatoes, I love home grown 'maters all kinds and varieties

Most memorable career moment to date?

My most memorable moment is when we won the best product award in the Chicago Flower show. We were honored and surprised

What famous figure(s) inspires your career?

I admire anyone who works hard and goes the extra mile to get the job done.

If you weren’t in your current occupation, what would be your dream job?

If I wasn't selling Flip Flop Pots. I'd be an off road race truck driver.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Keep your eye on the things you want and off the things you don't.
