Don't let the cold weather fool you — now is the perfect time to start planning your springtime garden! Mike Hendricks, co-author of Mike & Roxie's Vegetable Paradise and columnist for the Kansas City Star, gave us some of his best gardening tips you can do yourself. If someone wanted to make one change to their home or garden this year, what should it be?

Plant a fruit tree. It's a great investment. Fresh apples, tart cherries, peaches, etc. can be frozen, canned or turned into jellies, juices, even wine.

When planning a new garden space, what is the most important first step?

Make sure the space has adequate sunlight and drains well. Before digging, call to make sure there are no underground lines.

Name five major DIY tips that anyone could take advantage of now.

Always plan out your garden before planting, start plants from seed in the winter to save money and get more choice in plant varieties, build your own garden structures like composters and cold frames, buy our bok to learn how to do all that and finally, come to the show to hear our talk on Gardening 101.

What is the most important trend this year for spring?

Edible landscape is a biggie. Planting food crops that look good in the yard. But home veggie gardening overall is a growing trend.
